Notably through the novella “Anthem” by
Ayn Rand the theme is quite clear, the struggle to gain individuality. The pain
that the transgressor endures only proves what he believes to be true, and the
smile on his face was a sign of victory and understanding that the collective
feared him. As a matter of fact, the strive for individuality that Equality and
the Transgressor face is the theme for the Novella and is directly connected to
the story line.

To
illustrate the meaning of the transgressors action you must understand that the
Transgressor of the Unspeakable Word and Equality 7-2521 both suffer for what
they believe in. As the quote reads “As the chains were wound over their body at the stake,
and a flame set to the pyre, the Transgressor looked upon the City. There was a
thin thread of blood running from the corner of their mouth, but their lips
were smiling.” The pain that the transgressor endures only proves what he
believes to be true, and the smile on his face was a sign of victory and
understanding that the collective feared him for being more powerful as
individual rather than a part of the whole. More over when the council rejects
Equality’s invention and his actions, through this he grew to understand their
fear of one’s self interests over powering the interests of the whole. Actually,
what lead Equality to his understanding of the council’s fears is the way the
council responds to his forthcomings. Regarding the council’s reaction, they
are astonished not only at the invention but what equality did to create it, he
disregarded the laws of the society to pursue personal interests. Now in the case of the
Transgressor, who burns at the stake for speaking the word “I,” the word that
is not permitted to be spoken by his anti-individualistic society that believes
that things can only be done as a collective and not as an individual such as
the creation of the candle by the twelve scholars. And in the very similar
situation of Equality 7-2521, who is beat profusely for refusing to reveal his
secret tunnel and, later is ridiculed and exiled for seeking detachment from
the whole and pursuing scientific studies on his own resulting in his creation
of his lightbulb. In fact, the two are connected in two distinct ways. First,
the transgressor and equality grow as individuals and discover the word “I”. Second,
though society tortures both physically, neither one suffers emotionally during
the torture because they know they must suffer for their individuality.
Additionally, in the eyes of the author Ayn Rand physical suffering of the body
means nothing when it is for a cause which has such great meaning.
