After reviewing the “significant
contributors to the tradition” section of the chapter, the principles that
seemed to be the most reflected were Rights and Responsibilities, and Options
for the Poor and Vulnerable. Significant contributors such as St. Patrick, St.
Vincent de Paul, John LaFarge, and many other contributors brought attention to
the issue of human rights, specifically slavery. People have been using slave’s
way before the discovery of the Americas and slavery wasn’t abolished until the
19th century. The inhumane treatment towards slaves reflected the
lack of human rights that they had. People such as St. Patrick, St. Vincent de
Paul and John LaFarge took the responsibilities to speak up and advocate human
rights for everyone. In every society, there is a division between the rich and
the poor, and the number of poor is always increasing. People such as Catherine
de Hueck, Dorothy Day, and many other people put the needs of the poor and
vulnerable before theirs. They settled in slums, and understood the struggles
that these people were going through. By understanding the struggles that other
people were facing, they opened up homeless shelters and soup kitchens to ease
the struggles that these people were going through. By speaking up for those
who don’t have a voice and putting those who are in need first helps create a
more righteous environment for people to live in. 

 

Catherine de Hueck Doherty was born into a wealthy family who were Christians.
During the Russia Revolution in 1917, her home was destroyed and many of her
family members died. Catherine escaped, and lived in poverty while working to support
her family. She was able to work and become wealthy again by becoming a
successful lecturer, but that did not make her happy. Catherine sold all her
stuff and gave her life to God. She moved to the slums of Toronto and live
among the poor. The people who understood what she was doing joined her and
this formed the Friendship House. Since this was during the Great Depression, a
lot of people needed food and clothes. The Friendship house begged for food and
clothing to help those in need around them. Besides providing food and clothing
for the ones in need, they also fought the rising communist by teaching, and
distributing the “The Social Forum” in the newspaper. Although there were a lot
of problems that was going on in the world, the problems that Catherine was
facing at the moment was communism, and people in poverty. She responded to the
“signs of times” by providing for the poor and vulnerable, and fighting against
communist ideas that were terrorizing the country.

The principles of Catholic social
teaching and the various forms of moral reason both work hand in hand to help
people build a good foundation for a righteous life.  The principles of Catholic social teaching
help guide people to make decisions that would protect human life and enhances
human dignity. These principles help clarify those who are confused about moral
values. There are five forms of moral reasoning; theological or biblical,
tradition, philosophical, common human experience and pragmatic. These five reasoning
are justifications for moral reasoning. Although each justification is different
by biblical, theological, philosophical, experimental or pragmatic, human
dignity, and fundamental rights and responsibilities are common for all. By
using these forms of reasoning, people are able to apply them with the
principles to ensure that they are doing what is right.

There are four forms of moral discourse found in tradition. One
form of moral discourse is the form of narrative. By using the narrative form
of moral discourse, stories are used to send the message and impact someone’s
lives. One example of narrative discourse besides biblical stories, are the use
of fables. Fables are read to younger kids to teach them important lessons. The
second form of moral discourse is prophet. By using the prophet form of moral
discourse, prophets speak for God on earth. For example, Ezekial is a prophet.
He watched over the people in Jerusalem, and sees the horrible things that were
happening. He spoke on behalf of god and told the Jews what they were doing
wrong. The third form of moral discourse is ethical. Ethical discourse help provide reason for moral issues.
One example of ethical discourse is political activists. Political activists
are able to identify the unethical activities that the government is doing.
Their goal is to increase awareness and get rid of unethical activities. The
last form of moral discourse is policy. One example of policy are rules, or
laws. Rules and laws help guide people to let them know what they can do and
what they cannot do. These forms of moral discourse are related to principles
because the principles help offer criteria for action. These forms of moral
discourse help communicate Catholic social thought, but just by listening to it
might not be enough. But by taking action using the principles, changes can be
made. Out of the four moral discourse, I feel more drawn towards policy. Although
as a kid I found it hard to listen or understand the rules and laws, as I got
older I understood the reason why rules existed. By having a guideline to know
what is wrong and right, it helps me know the right decision to make.

The first mythological guideline is
convergence, this means to accepting and respecting other cultures. This has
played a role in my sense of morality because I know not to discriminate others
based on their background. I am treating everyone the same, and respecting
their thoughts and opinions. The second mythological guideline is contrast
denounces acts and structures incompatible with faith and human dignity. Since I
am a student, I am always learning about acts and structures that go against
faith and dignity. By bring awareness to these unethical actions, I am
spreading the message, I can get other people on board as well. The third
methodological guideline is advance acknowledges the evolution of moral
positions within the Bible and in history. This has played a role in my sense
of morality because I volunteer at charities to help people who are hungry. I
think it is important for people to give back to the people because it is our responsibilities
help those who are in need. The fourth mythological guideline is social
dimension. This has impacted my sense of morality because I learned to care
more about others instead of only myself. The fifth methodological guideline is
finality. Finality has played a role in my sense of morality because after
listening to other people’s stories, I want to help solve their issues and
remove them from feeling sad or hurt. The sixth methodological guideline is
discernment. By being able to make the right judgement from right and wrong is
very important for people to keep their moral values. Discernment has played a
role in my sense of morality by allowing me to make the right decision. Being
able to make the right decision help guide me to live a better life.
